Dearests, the Latins used to say, when the moments in conducting the opportunities for victory and conquest, or just consolidation, of the Republic of Rome were at risk or turned to the worst: “MALA TEMPORA CURRUNT!” They’re in bad times, they’re in bad times! 

The phrase seems to be attributable to Marcus Tullius Cicero, one of the greatest rhetoricians, authors and politicians of ancient Rome; and perhaps it could be said that the great literary and well-known lawyer of the Forum did not have all the wrongs in pointing out the difficult situation of his time, since in fact the end of the Republic was getting closer and closer in a preponderant and extremely predictable way, so much so that he closed the motto by stating “...sed peiora parantur...” i.e. “...but worse ones are prepared...” 

Many of us believe that this phrase, with its consequent way of thinking, is certainly attributable to the difficult and sad days that globally our peoples, our nations, our families, ourselves are living, oppressed and devastated by an invisible but lethal evil, which distorts our bodies, our minds, our lifestyles, our expectations, takes us away from the affection of our loved ones, at times when precisely closeness to loved ones would perhaps be the real way to defend everything. Humanly I believe that this spiritual and mental annihilation would be understandable, in view of the data and all the bad news that the media bring into our homes every day... but... certainly Cicero ignored for historical reasons, and we often forget – in abounding in despair and mistrust – that an event of planetary scope has turned our lives and hearts for two thousand years now: the Creator of the Universe, God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the One who is called by the scriptures the Holy Trinity, became Man and came to dwell among us! “Puer natus est!” announce the Deacon from the pulpit in the Holy Night, which we all prepare to live. 

The Lord of Armies, who led his people out of the land of Egypt, who defeated the Pharaoh at the Red Sea divided in its waters, became a Child, the humblest of all, being born in a cave, laid in a manger, to redeem us from our sins, to offer himself for our redemption... 

So here the phrase of our ancestors can only become a simple warning, combined with a great hope in the future and therefore become: “mala tempora currunt, sed maiora parantur!” 

The Son of Man has come among us, and if even the world today finds itself fighting one of the most difficult battles ever fought, this is the moment to believe that the Lord Jesus will never abandon us, always remains by our side! Alongside the doctors and nurses who help us daily with love and devotion in the war against the virus, alongside those who with a true spirit of charity concretely support and advise those who feel lost in this strange economic situation, associations, politicians, priests, laity who lend a hand to those who are now distrusted and frightened... 

This is Christmas! This is our Faith! It is Hope, in a world of true peace between men and women of good will, beyond economies, wars, politics, governments, elections, bureaucracy, which every day seem to sink us with their weight but which are small in the face of the True Life that Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, came to give us. 

So all of us, who commit ourselves every day under the banner of the eight-pointed Cross, must be living proof with our actions, with our works of charity, that it is not enough to recognize the suffering and the need in the face of our neighbour, trying to solve everything alone and only by “doing” but we, Knights and Dames, must above all be Soldiers of the Spirit, face the terrible challenges of these days with the Sword of Faith, because we will never be alone on the “battlefield” if we carry Christ in our hearts, as an armour of defence against all evil!

i latini erano soliti dire, quando i momenti nella conduzione delle opportunità di vittoria e conquista, o di solo consolidamento, della Repubblica di Roma erano a rischio o volgevano al peggio: “MALA TEMPORA CURRUNT!” “Corrono brutti tempi, corrono tempi cattivi!” 

La frase sembra sia attribuibile a Marco Tullio Cicerone, uno dei più grandi retori, autori e uomini politici della Roma antica; e forse si potrebbe dire che il grande letterato e noto avvocato del Foro non avesse tutti i torti nel rimarcare la difficile situazione dei suoi tempi, dato che in effetti la fine della Repubblica si avvicinava sempre più in maniera preponderante e oltremodo prevedibile, tanto che egli stesso chiudeva il motto affermando “…sed peiora parantur…” ovvero “…ma se ne preparano di peggiori…” 

Molti di noi ritengono che questa frase, con il suo conseguente modo di pensare, sia certamente attribuibile ai difficili e tristi giorni che a livello globale i nostri popoli, le nostre nazioni, le nostre famiglie, noi stessi stiamo vivendo, oppressi e devastati da un male invisibile ma letale, che stravolge i nostri corpi, le nostre menti, i nostri stili di vita, le nostre aspettative, ci toglie all’affetto dei nostri cari, nei momenti in cui proprio la vicinanza con le persone più care sarebbe forse la vera via per una difesa a tutto quello che è così reale e allo stesso tempo così difficilissimo da combattere. Umanamente credo che sarebbe comprensibile questo annichilimento spirituale e mentale, in considerazione dei dati e di tutte le pessime notizie che ogni giorno i media fanno entrare nelle nostre case…ma…certamente Cicerone ignorava, per motivi storici, e noi spesso dimentichiamo, nell’abbondonarci alla disperazione e alla sfiducia, che un evento di portata planetaria ha sconvolto le nostre vite e i nostri cuori, ormai da duemila anni: il Creatore dell’Universo, il Dio di Abramo, di Isacco, di Giacobbe, Colui che le Scritture chiamano il Tre Volte Santo, si è fatto Uomo ed è venuto ad abitare in mezzo a noi! “Puer natus est!” annuncerà il Diacono dal pulpito nella Notte Santa, che tutti ci prepariamo a vivere tra qualche giorno. 

Il Signore degli Eserciti, che condusse il suo Popolo fuori dalla terra d’Egitto, che sconfisse il Faraone, dinanzi al Mar Rosso diviso nelle sue acque, si è fatto Bambino, il più umile di tutti, nascendo in una grotta, deposto in una mangiatoia, per redimerci dal peccato originale, offrire sé stesso per la nostra redenzione... 

E allora ecco che la frase dei nostri antenati non può che diventare un semplice monito, unito ad una grande speranza nell’avvenire e quindi diventare: “mala tempora currunt, sed maiora parantur!” 

Il Figlio dell’Uomo è venuto tra noi, e se anche il mondo oggi si trova a combattere una battaglia tra le più ardue mai combattute, è questo il momento nel credere che il Signore Gesù non ci abbandonerà mai, restando al nostro fianco sempre! Al fianco dei medici e degli infermieri che quotidianamente ci aiutano, con amore e devozione, nella guerra contro il virus, a fianco di coloro che con vero spirito di carità supportano concretamente e consigliano chi si sente smarrito in questa strana congiuntura economica, delle associazioni, dei politici, dei sacerdoti, dei laici che porgono una mano a chi è ormai sfiduciato e spaventato… Questo è il Natale! 

Questa è la nostra Fede! E’ la Speranza, in un mondo di vera pace tra gli uomini e le donne di buona volontà, al di là delle economie, delle guerre, della politica, dei governi, delle elezioni, della burocrazia, che ogni giorno sembrano affossarci con il loro peso ma che sono piccolezze di fronte alla Vita Vera che Gesù Cristo, vero Dio e vero Uomo, è venuto a donarci. 

Ecco allora che tutti noi, che ci impegniamo ogni giorno sotto il vessillo della Croce a otto punte, dobbiamo essere prova vivente, con le nostre azioni, con le nostre opere di carità, che non basta riconoscere la sofferenza e il bisogno nel volto del nostro prossimo, cercando di risolvere tutto solo ed unicamente con il “fare” ma noi, Cavalieri e Dame, dobbiamo soprattutto essere Soldati dello Spirito, affrontare le sfide terribili di questi giorni con la Spada della Fede, perché non saremo mai soli sul “campo di battaglia” se porteremo Cristo nel cuore, come una corazza di difesa da ogni male! 

Nell’augurare a Voi e alle vostre famiglie un sereno Natale, vi invito a continuare a credere nei valori che le nostre insegne ci rappresentano, fiduciosi nel futuro, compassionevoli con il prossimo e saldi nella fede, sotto la guida salda e caritatevole del nostro amato Gran Maestro Prince Josè e di tutto il Governo dell’Ordine.
